Basic With Ads is HBO Max's lowest-priced plan in the US. It plays about six minutes of ads per hour during shows and movies; Standard and Premium are ad-free, although live events have ads on every plan.
In the US, every plan can be billed monthly or yearly, and HBO Max says the yearly price paid upfront saves money compared with paying monthly for 12 months.
If you pay HBO Max directly, changing to a lower-priced plan takes effect on your next billing date. Changing to a higher-priced plan happens at once: you pay the price difference and your billing date moves.

It depends on the country. HBO Max's US help says its US prices don't include applicable taxes, so our table marks US prices as excluding tax. HBO Max's German, Austrian and Israeli pages say monthly billing is "(incl VAT)", so our table marks those prices as tax included. Where neither the country page nor HBO Max's help for that country states the tax, our table labels the price with an unknown tax basis.
In the countries on HBO Max's availability list: much of Asia Pacific, Europe and Central Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean, and the United States with its territories. Countries that are not on the list, such as Japan, Canada, India, South Africa, the United Arab Emirates and South Korea, have no HBO Max country page, and HBO Max is not sold there, so our table has no price for them.
In some countries. The US and Indonesian pages sell yearly plans, and our table shows their upfront price. Mexico and Brazil sell a 12-month plan paid in 12 monthly instalments, and Poland's yearly cards are one prepaid year that then renews monthly; neither is a plain yearly plan, so our table shows the regular monthly price for those countries instead.
Yes. HBO Max's German and Austrian pages show today's price for Basic With Ads, Standard and Premium until 31 December 2026 and a higher monthly price from 1 January 2027. Our table shows the price in effect on the day we checked.
Yes. Besides HBOMax.com, HBO Max is sold through providers that vary by country, such as Amazon Appstore, Roku, Samsung and cable providers in the US, or Sky and BT in the UK. Some providers offer only some plans or only monthly billing. Our table compares the prices on HBO Max's own website.
If you pay HBO Max directly, go to HBOMax.com/subscription, choose Cancel Your Subscription and confirm. Cancel at least 24 hours before your next billing date to avoid another charge; you can keep watching until the end of the billing period. Deleting the app does not cancel your subscription. If another company bills you, such as an app store or TV provider, HBO Max's help sends you to that company's cancellation steps.
